But Pilates classes are scarier than, say, changing gyms. You enter the classroom and see the reformer. You're lucky if you even know that the extremely dangerous-looking equipment with springs and straps is called a reformer. You hear terms like 'centre of force' or 'neutral spine' and suddenly you're not sure you understand the Hungarian.  In other words, a Pilates class is one of those things that exudes that \"escape if you don't know what you're doing\" feeling.<\/p>\n<p>If you're one of those people who would like to try Pilates, but are held back by fear of the unknown, it's time to step out of your comfort zone! Your job is to keep reading first, and our job is to arm you for your first Pilates class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to wear if you're going to do Pilates?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many people prefer to work out in a loose, oversized T-shirt and sweatpants. But for Pilates classes, it's a good idea to wear a tight, \"clingy\" T-shirt and leggings. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the Pilates instructor can see better how your muscles move while you're doing the exercises, and can tell if you're doing them correctly. The second reason is that oversized shirts can easily get caught in some parts of the aforementioned reformer. No one will be watching your loops and swim trunks during your workout - everyone will be busy doing the exercises, and besides, everyone in Pilates classes is extremely open and accepting! It's also a good idea to leave your shorts at home, as there are a number of exercises where your legs will be in the air - so stick to leggings unless you want to flash.<\/p>\n<p>You also have to get rid of your sneakers. Whether you do your exercises barefoot or in socks is usually your choice, but it's worth asking when you sign up as this can vary from studio to studio If you opt for socks - they're more hygienic - it's important to choose ones with anti-slip grips so you don't slip on the equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid buckles, buckles, belts, chains, jewellery - not only can they make training uncomfortable, but they can also damage equipment. For similar reasons, you can safely forget about make-up.<\/p>\n<p>If you have long hair, tie it up or braid it, as it can be very distracting if it hangs in your face.<\/p>\n<p>Let's not forget that although you and the other exercisers will not sweat profusely during Pilates, it is normal that in an enclosed room with several people exercising, there will be certain smells. There is nothing wrong with that in itself, but trying to disguise these natural smells with strong perfumes or deodorants will only make things worse. We're not saying you shouldn't use deodorant at all, but maybe stick to fragrance-free versions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to take with you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nothing. Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. It's good to have a bottle of water. Although you won't drink as much as you would during an aerobic workout, hydration is important during pilates. Many people only like to exercise on their own exercise mats, so if you have your favourite, it's fine to take it with you. Pilates exercise mats are slightly thicker than those used for yoga, adding to the comfort.<\/p>\n<p>If you've heard about tools like the reformer, the stability chair or the cadillac and panicked that you don't have one, you can relax now. These are provided by the studio, and you won't be using them at first anyway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should you expect?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hard work. If you've peered through the window of a Pilates studio a few times, you've probably seen a couple of dozen people lying on the floor. You've let yourself believe that it's easy to lie on the floor. But you will soon realise that this is not true at all. You'll be working muscles you didn't even know existed. And if you feel the burn during exercise, you'll feel the muscle fatigue after exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Be prepared to be thoroughly questioned about any injuries or changes. Trainers do not do this out of curiosity, but it is important to know about things such as surgery, illness, pain, injuries or possibly pregnancy. If they don't ask but you have something to tell them, don't be afraid to go to the instructor and tell them. They will only be able to personalise the exercises if they know everything about you.<\/p>\n<p>Expect to hear a lot of phrases you don't know. Feel free to look at what others are doing. It's best to stand in the middle, as you'll have a good view of the instructor and the other gymnasts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some bonus tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don't be late! Respect the instructor and your peers by arriving on time.<\/li>\n<li>Don't try to chat with the others during class! You can make friends before and after class, but don't distract yourself (or others) while the class is in progress.<\/li>\n<li>At the end of the class, put the equipment back where you took it! Just as you like to arrive to a tidy room, the group coming after you will want to find everything in its place.<\/li>\n<li>Don't disappear without a word! Sometimes you may have to miss a class. But it only takes half a minute to call in. They won't wait for you or worry about you.<\/li>\n<li>Warm up before class! If you arrive a little early, use the time to warm up. But don't disturb a class in progress. Do not occupy equipment and respect the group by not talking loudly on the phone. Instead, find a quiet corner, warm up and wait until the class is over.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that you know roughly what to expect, no more excuses!
